ON EVANGELIZATION AND MISSION
(Part 104)

COMMISSIONED TO PREACH THE GOSPEL – 8

May 1, 2019
Today’s gospel: John 3:16-21

What is the situation in the world today? Evil spreads, paganism grows, apostasy intensifies, darkness deepens. The truth is overturned on its head, where today what is good has become bad and what is bad is considered good. People are dying in their sins.

But “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.” (v.16). In Jesus we are saved. God does not give up on us. “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.” (v.17).

In Jesus we are saved, but we need to accept that salvation. God does not force even the good thing of eternal life upon us. The choice is ours. And it is a crucial choice, and determines whether we ultimately go to heaven or to hell. “Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.” (v.18). Jesus is the only way.

Unfortunately, “the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil.” (v.19). Even many who supposedly are Christians continue to live in darkness and sin. In fact, in an increasingly secular and humanist world, people have not only not lived the way of Jesus, but have turned against faith and the Church. They are embracing the zeitgeist, assaulting family and life, and even accepting such abominations as Satanism. Modernists hate those who are striving to live out an authentic Christian life. “For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed.” (v.20).

This is the situation we face. The Savior has already come. Salvation has already been won. But we continue to lose people to darkness and evil. There is a need to intensify the work of evangelization. We need to proclaim Christ so that people might be brought to repentance and be renewed in their faith. We need to expose the lie of the isms of this world. We need to bring people back to the plan of God, for marriage and family and life. We need to help people live Christ and to grow in holiness. This is the only way for light to dispel the darkness, for truth to overturn the lies, for works to become truly life-giving. “For whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God.” (v.21).

The gospel is the good news of salvation in Jesus. For people, including lapsed Catholics, to meet Christ and to live Christ, we must share Christ. This is our commission from Jesus himself. This is our responsibility and our privilege.
