(Part 112)

COMMISSIONED TO PREACH THE GOSPEL – 15

May 18, 2019
Today’s reading: Acts 13:44-52

In today’s reading, we have the basic commission of Jesus for his disciples to preach the gospel. “For so the Lord has commanded us, ‘I have made you a light to the Gentiles, that you may be an instrument of salvation to the ends of the earth.’” (v.47). What are the important aspects of this commission?

First, note that it is a command. The Lord commands us. It is not a request, it is not a suggestion, it is not just a good idea that we might consider. It is a command. Every disciple of Jesus needs to look to how he can help proclaim the good news of salvation in him. It is a very crucial task, to accomplish God’s purpose in the world.

Second, it is about the very salvation of people. Jesus came and died on the cross to save us. That salvation was accomplished by Jesus, but it is to be proclaimed by us his followers. So we are to be instruments of salvation! Can you appreciate what a great privilege that is? We are instruments to bring to completion the very work and intent of Jesus. But with the privilege comes the responsibility. God is making Himself dependent upon His people to accomplish in their lives the very reason Jesus came into the world. It is a privilege and responsibility we cannot ignore.

Third, we accomplish our commission by being witnesses to Jesus. This happens as we become light to the world. The world is in ever-deepening darkness, but the light of Christ has come. We bring and carry that light in order to help dispel the darkness and evil around us. As light bearers, we need to strive to be holy as God is holy. We need to be credible witnesses, reflecting the very light and goodness of the Savior. We need to be another Christ.

Fourth, the commission is to proclaim the gospel to the whole world, to all nations, to the ends of the earth. Thus it is massive work. Each one of course witnesses in his normal day-to-day circumstances of life. Then there are those who go out on mission. The work is to be rapid, massive and worldwide.

If we do what we are supposed to do, then God provides the fruit. The heart of God is for the conversion of all. Jesus went to extreme lengths in order to win salvation for all. The Holy Spirit animates the mission and empowers evangelizers. Here is the reality: “All who were destined for eternal life came to believe” (v.48b).

Let us respond to God’s call, so that what happened before would happen again, as “the word of the Lord continued to spread through the whole region.” (v.49). And throughout the whole world.

Preaching the gospel is the very work of God. We are privileged to be commissioned to do this work. In this work we will find our fulfillment. “The disciples were filled with joy and the holy Spirit.” (v.52).
