FROM THE SERVANT GENERAL

ON EVANGELIZATION AND MISSION
(Part 33)

IN THE LAST DAYS

April 9, 2012
Today’s reading: Acts 2:14-33

Peter said the disciples were not drunk because it was only 9am (Acts 2:15). LOL. But why were they acting like drunks? It was not spirits, but the Spirit. The prophecy of Joel was being fulfilled. “‘It will come to pass in the last days,’ God says, ‘that I will pour out a portion of my spirit upon all flesh.’” (Acts 2:17a). During these times, God’s people will prophesy, see visions and dream dreams (Acts 2:17b).

It will be exciting times, when God “will work wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below: blood, fire, and a cloud of smoke.” (Acts 2:19). It will be the time “before the coming of the great and splendid day of the Lord.” (Acts 2:20b). It will be the end times, prior to the second coming of Christ.

In the meantime, while anxiously awaiting his coming, we are to proclaim him to the world. Jesus died so that all might be saved. How? The simple reality is “that everyone shall be saved who calls on the name of the Lord.” (Acts 2:21). That is what we proclaim. “God raised this Jesus; of this we are all witnesses.” (Acts 2:32).

Jesus in now in heaven, and he has given his Church, including us, the task of proclaiming the good news of salvation in him to the whole world. Before Jesus ascended into heaven, even as he sent them forth to be his witnesses to all the nations, he told them to wait for the promise of the Father, staying in the city until they were clothed with power from on high. This Jesus did on the day of Pentecost. “Exalted at the right hand of God, he received the promise of the holy Spirit from the Father and poured it forth” (Acts 2:33a).
The Spirit the apostles received, we too have received. The commission the disciples were given, we too have been given.

Let all peoples “both see and hear.” (Acts 2:33b). Let them see the witness of our holy lives, and let them hear the good news proclaimed by our mouths. Let our hearts be filled with hope and joy, and let our tongues exult the name of the Lord. “Therefore my heart has been glad and my tongue has exulted” (Acts 2:26a).

The times are urgent. We are in the last days. Let us not waste any moment of it.
