THE SERVANT GENERAL
ON EVANGELIZATION AND MISSION
OUR WORK OF EVANGELIZATION AND MISSION - 9
Today’s gospel: Mark 6:7-13
The mission of the Twelve is our mission as well. We too are
sent (an apostle is one who is sent). What does the work of
evangelization and mission entail?
we become engaged in spiritual warfare. “They drove
out many demons” (v.13a). The whole world is under the
dominion of the evil one and a tsunami of evil is upon us.
Demons are feverishly at work. With evangelization and mission,
we assault this dominion of the evil one, and strive to liberate
his captives. Because the enemy is powerful, we are in for
a fight. But we must know we are already on the winning side.
Jesus has already defeated the enemy, and for his workers,
he “gave them authority over unclean spirits.”
the very first step, after being sent, is to preach the gospel
with the intent of bringing people to metanoia, a
turning back to God. “So they went off and preached
repentance.” (v.12). God sent His own Son because He
is merciful, but such mercy is an invitation to repentance.
When people repent and put their faith in Jesus, they experience
the salvation he won for them on the cross.
the work of evangelization and mission is all about liberation,
spiritual and social. “And they anointed with oil many
who were sick and cured them.” (v.13b). People who accept
Jesus as Savior and Lord are not only freed from the dominion
of the evil one, but are on the way to wholeness, a life of
purity, holiness and perfection.
can see how important apostles are. We are those modern-day
apostles, the workers bringing in the harvest. In responding
to the call, we are to rely totally on the Holy Spirit. “He
instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking
stick--no food, no sack, no money in their belts.” (v.8).
God provides for those whom He sends.
