ON EVANGELIZATION AND MISSION
(Part 78)

OBEYING CHRIST

April 2, 2016

Today’s readings:
Acts 4:13-21
Mark 16:9-15

Before Jesus ascends into heaven, after having completed his divine mission on earth, but knowing that the work of salvation continues, Jesus gives his disciples their final instruction: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.” (Mk 16:15). This is the commission to all Christians, as all Christians are also apostles, that is, those who are sent. All who live Christ need to share Christ. This is the work of evangelization and mission.

The apostles took to heart what Jesus commanded and devoted their lives to the spread of the gospel, despite any and all opposition. The religious authorities commanded them to cease and desist, “so that it may not be spread any further among the people” (Acts 4:17a). They “ordered them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.” (Acts 4:18). Their response? “Whether it is right in the sight of God for us to obey you rather than God, you be the judges. It is impossible for us not to speak about what we have seen and heard.” (Acts 4:19-20).

The authorities told them not to share Christ but they did. How about us? Jesus tells us to evangelize but we do not. It is time to decide whom we are to obey.
