FROM THE SERVANT GENERAL

ON THE TRIUNE GOD
(Part 12)

LOVE, GRACE AND FELLOWSHIP - 2

Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity
June 11, 2017
Today’s reading: 2 Corinthians 13:11-13

“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the holy Spirit be with all of you.” (v.13). So ends the letter of Paul to the Galatians. And here is the clearest statement in the New Testament on the reality and mystery that is the Trinity. There is one God but there are three Persons. The three Persons of the Trinity have different roles, all critically important to our faith in living as authentic Christians.

At its core is the love of the Father, who sent His own Son into the world to suffer and die for us, in order to win for us our salvation. The Father created us out of love, and created a bountiful world for us to live in, providing richly for all our needs. He loves all of His children and wants no one to be lost, and for all to be restored to eternal bliss with Him in heaven.

Jesus is the Son who went to the cross for us. He showered us with the free and unmerited favor of God, bestowing salvation to sinners and blessings upon wretched sinful creatures. He fills us with his grace, by which we are enabled to live our lives for him, in holiness and discipleship. “From his fullness we have all received, grace in place of grace” (Jn 1:16).

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Jesus by which Jesus is with us “always, until the end of the age.” (Mt 28:20b). This is how we remain in fellowship with God, through the action of the Holy Spirit, who is the Advocate, the Paraclete. In our walk with God, the Holy Spirit guides us to all truth (Jn 16:13). In living out our Christian faith, the Holy Spirit empowers us.

Such is our God. Such is “the God of love and peace” (v.11c). How do we respond? “Mend your ways, encourage one another, agree with one another, live in peace” (v.11b). And because we have the Trinity as our God, then whatever the circumstances of our lives, we must always “rejoice.” (v.11a).
