TRUE AND FALSE MERCY - 2

April 3, 2017
Today’s gospel: John 8:1-11

Liberals in our Church today want to be nice, welcoming, accommodating of those who have fallen into sin and are outside the embrace of the Church. Well and good. But where this approach falls short is when political correctness comes in, that is, sinners are welcomed and embraced but are not told of their sin. Church liberals do not want to offend them by confronting them with their sin.

This was not the way of Jesus. With regard to the woman caught in adultery, Jesus was loving and not condemning, but he was clear and straightforward about the need to avoid sin. Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin any more.” (v.11b). Liberals stop at the first sentence.

That is what is called false mercy. Love and mercy that does not act to help bring someone out of sin is collusion with evil. Contrary to the thinking of liberals, it is not helpful to sinners, as they remain in their sin and outside the embrace of God. Yes they have been embraced by people, but not by God.

We are called to love the sinner but to hate the sin. That is true mercy.
