THE SERVANT GENERAL
THE SLIPPERY SLOPE
Today’s reading: Genesis 3:9-24
There is so much that can be said with regard to today’s
reading from the book of Genesis, but I will touch just on
one point, in relation to the ongoing Church debate on controversial
topicscohabitation, communion for the divorced and remarried,
and same-sex unions.
said: “See! The man has become like one of us, knowing
good and evil! Now, what if he also reaches out his hand to
take fruit from the tree of life, and eats of it and lives
forever?” (v.22). Taking the forbidden fruit from the
tree of knowledge of good and evil symbolized man’s
taking control over his own morality, deciding for himself
what is good (the only evil is not being nice to others),
and throwing off God’s dominion over him. In the modern
world, this started with the acceptance of contraception,
negating God’s intent for marriage and family. Contraception
greatly promoted sexual licentiousness and sexual gratification
became the be-all and end-all. Of course the ultimate triumph
of the evil one’s intent to destroy family and life
is same-sex unions. Here there certainly is no marriage, and
there is the impossibility of begetting life.
indeed it would not end there. God already warned us from
the very beginning. Now man has also taken the fruit from
the tree of life. Man decided that, not only would he control
his own life, but he would also control life itself. Thus
came abortion and euthanasia and assisted suicide. Thus came
in vitro fertilization and test-tube babies. Thus came manipulation
of DNA and cloning. Thus comes all sorts of treatment to rejuvenate
youth. Thus we have the emergence of artificial intelligence.
Man indeed is making himself a god.
man live forever? That is what the devil says. But what does
God say? “For you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
Church must be careful not to step upon the slippery slope
that leads to death.
