SYNODOS
(Part 46)

A BATTLE GOING ON

March 24, 2015

This time I perfectly agree with Cardinal Kasper, that a battle is going on. It is a spiritual battle, with the vitality of our faith and the future of souls at stake. The only question is where you stand in this battlewith God or with the enemy? We indeed have to continually pray for the bishops who will be at the Synod this October.

The unfortunate thing in this battle is that it is between prelates, between the liberals and the conservatives. The battle is among us. Both sides agree on some basic values, such as mercy and compassion. But those same sides will differ on pastoral practice or practical application. Assuming good intentions in both sides, we implore the Holy Spirit to touch minds and hearts.

While I would concede that there could be extreme cases where one in an irregular union (divorced and remarried), with true repentance and a truly fervent faith, could be accepted to Holy Communion, the problem is in making such acceptance widespread and commonplace. The exception then becomes the rule. This has been the case with the anti-life thrust, where for example extremes (like rape or incest) are cited to justify acceptance of abortion, only to end up having abortion on demand.

As such, it is better to err on the side of prudence, rather than opening the door a little bit, only to end up opening the floodgates to perdition.

Cardinal Kasper asks prayers for Synod, says 'a battle is going on'

Catholic World News - March 23, 2015

Cardinal Walter Kasper has asked the faithful to pray for the success of the October 2015 meeting of the Synod of Bishops, “because a battle is going on.”

Cardinal Kasper-- who played a leading role in the 2014 Synod meeting, arguing that divorced and remarried Catholics should be allowed to receive the Eucharist under some circumstances-said that the Synod will face the challenge of articulating a position “which will not be a rupture with tradition, but a doctrine that is a development of tradition.”

The German cardinal made his request for prayers as he introduced a new book, Pope Francis’s Revolution of Tenderness and Love.
