(Part 96)

October 13, 2015
Today’s reading: Romans 1:16-25

What has infected the world, including our Church, including some elders of our Church, are the modern isms - secularism, humanism, Modernism. Modernism is a philosophical movement that, when applied to our faith, tries to eliminate God from all social life, puts man at the center of everything (rather than God), tries to live in harmony with the spirit of the age, and adapts Catholicism to the intellectual, moral and social needs of today.

This is what is happening with some prelates at the Synod, who look at society today and desire to adapt the Church to the times. Rather than being counter-cultural, they want the Church to be the one to conform to the culture of the age. Thus, with regards to the various irregular situations in the area of human sexuality (live-in, divorce and remarriage, same-sex), these prelates would like to see how these Catholics who are in serious sin can be accommodated, accompanied, shown mercy and compassion.

Modernism has been around for quite some time. It was there at the time of Paul and the early Church. Paul spoke about it to the Romans. “They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and revered and worshiped the creature rather than the creator” (v.25a). This is what our liberal prelates are doing. They will set aside the truth of the teaching of Jesus and the Church (for example about divorce and re-marriage being adultery) and settle for the lie. They look to the well-being of the sinner rather than the righteousness of God (and the ultimate well-being of the sinner). They want to adapt godly virtues such as mercy and compassion to the convenience of men and thus accommodate their sin.

Are our liberal prelates not aware of the wrong that they advocate? But they are Church elders, steeped in religious study. “For what can be known about God is evident to them, because God made it evident to them.” (v.19). What then has happened? They no longer know nor live out the faith. They have been absorbed by the spirit of the age and have looked to man rather than God. Do they even truly pray? How can the more extreme liberals among the prelates at the Synod even support the abomination of homosexual relationships? What has happened is that “although they knew God they did not accord him glory as God or give him thanks. Instead, they became vain in their reasoning, and their senseless minds were darkened.” (v.21).

Now these liberal prelates propose all kinds of approaches that are contrary to our faith and are very dangerous, with the potential of ultimately destroying faith, family and life. “While claiming to be wise, they became fools” (v.22). Not only that, many of them end up destroying themselves. There are some who are active homosexuals. “Therefore, God handed them over to impurity through the lusts of their hearts for the mutual degradation of their bodies.” (v.24).

How deep has been the infiltration of our Church by these liberals? Well, they are in positions of influence. There is Msgr Krzystof Charamsa who came out as gay on the eve of the Synod and flaunted his having a homosexual lover; he is with the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. There is Fr Thomas Rosica, who lauded former Catholic priest Gregory Baum who advocates homosexual marriage and sex outside marriage; Fr Rosica is the spokesperson of the Synod of Bishops. There is Cardinal Vincent Nichols of Westminster, who publicly supports radical activist group LGBT Catholics Westminster, which publicly rejects Catholic teachings on homosexuality; he was elected as moderator of one of the small discussion groups at the Synod.

We certainly cannot and will not accept Modernism in our Church, in whatever form. We hate the sin but love the sinner, and so we desire to help those Catholics who are in sin, not keep them in their sin as the liberals would do. We also should speak out forcefully against those clerics or religious who speak and promote Modernism. They not only endanger the eternal destiny of Catholics, but their own souls as well. “The wrath of God is indeed being revealed from heaven against every impiety and wickedness of those who suppress the truth by their wickedness.” (v.18).

Know the faith. Know the gospel. Live it. Defend it. Die for it. “For I am not ashamed of the gospel. It is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes” (v.16a). The authentic Catholic faith is the only way to eternal life. It certainly in no way sets aside the hard teachings of Jesus nor the Magisterium of our Church.

Continue to pray for our prelates and the pope at the Ordinary Assembly of the Synod of Bishops ongoing in Rome. Pray ardently that liberalism and Modernism do not gain any more foothold inside our Church. Pray for the righteousness of God to be their focus. Our very salvation is on the line. “For in it is revealed the righteousness of God from faith to faith; as it is written, ‘The one who is righteous by faith will live.’” (v.17).
