THE SERVANT GENERAL
THE CALL TO HOLINESS
PURITY OF HEART AND DEED
October 21, 2016
Today’s psalm: Psalm 24:1-6
We are called to holiness.
this is because we are a creation of God, we are children
of God, and we belong to God, who is holy. “The earth
is the Lord’s and all it holds, the world and those
who dwell in it.” (v.1).
this is because as children of God, we are destined for heaven.
But heaven is a holy place, where the Holy One lives. Thus
we too need to be holy. “Who may go up the mountain
of the Lord? Who can stand in his holy place?” (v.3).
is holiness? Who are those who are considered holy? It is
“the clean of hand and pure of heart” (v.4a).
It is the one whose deeds are righteous, whose thoughts and
desires are pure. It is one “who has not given his soul
to useless things, what is vain.” (v.4b). Such a one
is he who has embraced the deadly isms of the world--consumerism,
secular humanism, modernism, cultural Marxism, contraceptive
imperialism, hedonism. Such are attractive to the fallen
soul, but are useless, vain and deadly.
already won for us our salvation. This is God’s mercy.
This brings us to the fulfillment of God’s justice,
which is to give us what He wills for us, what is our due,
which is eternal life in heaven. Thus the holy person receives
“justice from his saving God.” (v.5b). And throughout
his lifetime, he will receive what children receive from loving
parents--all good things. “He will receive blessings
from the Lord” (v.5a).
whom Jesus has died for and has saved are called to holiness.
But not many truly respond. Will we be such a people? Will
we strive for holiness, that is, seeking God in this life,
and looking to be with God in the afterlife? Be holy as God
is holy. “Such is the generation that seeks him, that
seeks the face of the God of Jacob.” (v.6).
