THE CALL TO HOLINESS
(Part 16)

THE WILL OF GOD

September 1, 2017
Today’s reading: 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8

What is the will of God for the life of a person, especially a Christian? It is certainly not to indulge in sexual licentiousness, which unfortunately very many Christians do so today. The teaching of God in the Bible is very clear. “This is the will of God, your holiness: that you refrain from immorality” (v.3).

Today this direct teaching is no longer clear or even known to Christians. It is unlike the time of Paul who could say, “For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus.” (v.2). Today political correctness just wants to love the sinner without hating and condemning the sin. Such a posture is promoted even by clerics, including bishops at high levels. They are willing to give holy Communion to those in unrepented irregular unions, such as the divorced and remarried, those living in, and those in same-sex unions.

The prescription for marriage and family had always been holiness, not just love. It is necessary “that each of you know how to acquire a wife for himself in holiness and honor” (v.4). Marriage is a great and noble calling, a divine calling. Its basis cannot just be the attraction between a man and a woman, and certainly not just for sexual desire. Christians are to relate to spouse “not in lustful passion” (v.5a). Otherwise, they would not be acting as Christians but as “the Gentiles who do not know God” (v.5b).

Today there is so much sexual licentiousness. There is the hook-up culture. There is adultery and fornication. There is infidelity resulting in divorce and break-up of families. No wonder there is the resultant break-down of the social order. Christians no longer know and heed what God has taught. “For God did not call us to impurity but to holiness.” (v.7).

Be warned. “Therefore, whoever disregards this, disregards not a human being but God” (v.8a). The consequences of such will be terrible. God wants us to live lives of love, peace and joy. Thus God “gives his holy Spirit to you.” (v.8b). Those who would receive the Holy Spirit are to be holy themselves.
