(Part 11)

July 15, 2013
Today’s reading: Exodus 1:8-22

The culture of death is the diabolical work of Satan. Among his powerful forces are the dominant nations and individual western billionaires, who are depopulationists. They want to severely limit the population of the world, especially of the poorer peoples whom they look down upon. Ted Turner of CNN has said that the ideal population is only 500 million (so 6 billion people have to be eliminated; if only he would show good example and start with himself!).

These worldly forces are not concerned about quality of life for all, but only quality of life for themselves, and especially about preserving power and use of the world’s resources. Population is power, and so they fear the greater masses of people, who are poor. The USA, the only superpower left (watch out, China is emerging), fears the power that comes with sheer numbers. “See! The Israelite people have multiplied and become more numerous than we are! Come, let us deal shrewdly with them to stop their increase; otherwise, in time of war they too may join our enemies to fight against us, and so leave the land.” (Ex 1:9-10). This is the rationale behind the infamous NSSM 200, seeking to limit population in selected countries, including the Philippines.

“And so leave the land.” The capitalist and imperialist western nations want the resources of the developing world, as well as the cheap labor they provide. Many poor people are actually slaves in their own nations working for their western masters, drawing meager pay, kept in perpetual underdevelopment through onerous bilateral agreements, for the sake of the opulent lifestyles of the West. Western powers just want their resources. A recent example is the huge trade in charcoal coming from Somalia going to Europe. Europeans will not cut down their trees, as this will affect their quality of life. But they encourage Africans to cut down their trees, to provide them with fuel at cheap cost. The western powers do not want to give up their power and access to cheap labor and resources.

And so we have the culture of death, pushed by Satan through world powers, such as the USA under Obama, the European Union, elements of the United Nations, billionaire philanthropists, international liberal media, and the like. Other non-western nations have been infected. Such as China, with its one-child policy. “If it is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, she may live.” (Ex 1:16b). Egypt was concerned about boys who would become men who could become soldiers. China, in turn, just wants to limit its population. Interestingly, the Chinese are aborting the girls because they want boys. So now China has a male surplus of 37 million men, giving rise to kidnapping and trafficking of women. A notice to the West and their growing fear of China as an economic and military power: having 37 million excess men is a prod to going to war. With war China achieves two things: getting rid of many of its excess males, and using this cannon fodder to expand its territory and dominion in the world (watch out, nations with territorial claims in the South China Sea).

The story in today’s reading happened in Egypt because “a new king, who knew nothing of Joseph, rose to power in Egypt.” (Ex 1:8). The new Pharaoh no longer considered all that Joseph had done for Egypt, including saving the nation through the time of world famine. Today’s culture of death is happening because the new societies no longer know about God and what God has done for the world, including the salvation that Jesus has won for all. Many have turned their backs on their Judeo-Christian heritage, including the formerly staunch Catholic nations of Europe, and the dominant Christian nations of the First World (USA, Canada, Australia, etc.).

“Accordingly, they set supervisors over the Israelites to oppress them with forced labor.” (Ex 1:11a). Today the new oppression is the culture of death being forcibly imposed on the developing nations by the anti-life, anti-family, homosexualist forces of the western world. These forces are forcing governments into oppressing their own peoples, trying to overturn their traditional cultures and family-oriented values. They are passing laws imposing contraception, sterilization, abortion, divorce, same-sex unions, euthanasia, etc. They are destroying the very fabric of societies, brainwashing peoples and tossing them the crumbs of free sex and a do-what-you-want-because-it-is-your-right culture.

“So the Egyptians reduced the Israelites to cruel slavery, making life bitter for them” (Ex 1:13-14a). So Satan, who has dominion over the whole world, has reduced its inhabitants to cruel slavery. They are slaves to money, to power, to illicit sex, to hedonism, and the like. Licentious sex, abortion and the like have not brought liberation but depravity, not blessing but woe, not joy but sorrow. The foundations of stable marriages, godly values in families, God-centered societies and the Christian faith are being systematically overturned. Life in today’s darkened world is indeed bitter for many.

But there is hope. The Hebrew “midwives, however, feared God; they did not do as the king of Egypt had ordered them, but let the boys live.” (Ex 1:17). Today there is an ongoing revival in the faith. There is a growing pro-life movement. We are fighting back.

“Therefore God dealt well with the midwives; and the people multiplied and grew very numerous. And because the midwives feared God, God built up families for them.” (Ex 1:20-21). Satan seeks to overthrow everything that is of God, to overturn the very plan of God from creation with regard to marriage, family and life. But God, who has already won the victory in Jesus over Satan, now overthrows and overturns Satan’s works. Satan deals badly with the peoples of the world, while God redeems and restores them.

Depopulationists push abortion and other anti-life measures, while pro-lifers continue to be fertile and multiply, and encourage others to be generous in having children through their God-given fertility and raising them in a Christian home. Those societies and nations that bought in to the overpopulation myth and lie are now discovering they have committed demographic suicide, and are desperately trying to reverse their plunging birth rates, while nations with large populations are starting to populate their societies, eventually taking over their lands and resources. Satan destroys families, while God builds up the families of those who obey Him and follow His plan for them.

“Yet the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread” (Ex 1:12a). Oppression and persecution is the lot of Christians who truly live for Christ. It is the way of the Master himself. For us today, the privilege of embracing the cross of Jesus is the key to remaining strong in our faith, and in fighting for the culture of life.

May pro-lifers continue to multiply, both in numbers of children and in numbers of staunch advocates. May their zeal intensify, may they remain steadfast and persevering despite hardships and challenges, and may they spread their godly work throughout the whole world.
