THE NEW EVANGELIZATION
(Part 114)

LIVING IN THE END TIMES - 10

January 25, 2015

Today’s readings:
1 Corinthians 7:29-31
Mark 1:14-20

“I tell you, brothers, the time is running out.” (1 Cor 7:29a). Why? “For the world in its present form is passing away.” (1 Cor 7:31b). Today’s decadent world is hurtling towards judgment day. Divine reckoning will be at hand. How people live their lives today (and there is no time to lose) will determine their eternal destinyin heaven or in hell.

So we are not to just engage in the day-to-day circumstances of our liveshaving spouses, weeping, rejoicing, buying and selling (1 Cor 7:29b-30). These are what the world is focused on. But many, including Christians, are unmindful of judgment day. They are not reforming their lives, not living according to God’s call to holiness, not engaging themselves in the crucial work of the Church. And time is running out.

What should people be doing? They are to listen to Jesus and do what he tells them. “Repent, and believe in the gospel.” (Mk 1:15c). Then there will be those who will be called to become “fishers of men” (Mk 1:17b). These will be ordinary people, such as fishermen (Mk 1:16), or such as you and me. How should we respond to Jesus’ call? The same way as Simon and Andrew. “Then they abandoned their nets and followed him.” (Mk 1:18). They gave priority to Jesus’ call and to the work of the Kingdom. The same way as James and John. “Then he called them. So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him.” (Mk 1:20). They left family and the family business in order to follow Jesus.

If we truly realized that the time is running out, then we must reassess our priorities. Are we still fully engaged in the world and what it offers? Do we give enough of ourselves for the work of the Kingdom? Are we willing to give Jesus our all?
