THE NEW EVANGELIZATION
(Part 115)

EXPAND YOUR VISION - 8

January 26, 2015

Today’s readings:
2 Timothy 1:1-8
Psalm 96:1-10
Luke 10:1-9

Jesus started with a core group of 12. “After this the Lord appointed seventy (-two) others” (Lk 10:1a). Today all Christians are supposed to do the work of evangelization. However, as always, “the harvest is abundant but the laborers are few” (Lk 10:2a).

How abundant is the harvest? Well, 1/3 of the world’s population is now Christian (at least in name). If 99 of every 100 of those sheep are lost, the potential harvest of lapsed Christians is over 2 billion. Then there are those non-Christians comprising over 4.5 billion people.

How do we reach them all? One way is LCSC, a lay response to the call to the New Evangelization. In the Philippines, the goals as far as reaching lapsed Catholics with the gospel message grow geometrically. 10K in 2014, 50K in 2015, 150K in 2016, 400K in 2017, 800K in 2018, 1.7M in 2019, 3M in 2020.

This can only happen through the concerted and determined effort of God’s people. We are to “proclaim his salvation day after day.” (Ps 96:2b). We are to “tell his glory among the nations, among all peoples” (Ps 96:3a). Persistently. Consistently. Zealously. With an expanded vision of a massive harvest.

We are not to be afraid, because “God did not give us a spirit of cowardice” (2 Tm 1:7a). We should “not be ashamed of (our) testimony to our Lord” (2 Tm 1:8a). We must be ready to “bear (our) share of hardship for the gospel” (2 Tm 1:8c). We are to be reminded “to stir into flame the gift of God that (we) have through the imposition of my hands.” (2 Tm 1:6).

Jesus sent the 72 “ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit.” (Lk 10:1). Jesus will return to earth at the end of time. Before he does, we are tasked to go to every town and place in order to bring people back to God.

Expand your vision. Know that “the harvest is abundant.” Be convinced that you are given “the strength that comes from God.” (2 Tm 1:8d). Go, and “declare among the nations: The Lord is king.” (Ps 96:10a).
