THE NEW EVANGELIZATION
(Part 125)

PETER’S OTHER SERMON

April 16, 2015
Today’s reading: Acts 5:27-33

Last April 6-7, we saw how our 5-session LCS is in accordance with Peter’s sermon on the day of Pentecost. Last April 9, we saw that our 5-session LCS is in accordance with Jesus’ Great Commission. Today, Peter speaks to the Sanhedrin. It is still the same basic gospel message, the very core of the good news.

* Session #1: Jesus the Messiah

“The God of our ancestors raised Jesus, though you had him killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him at his right hand as leader and savior” (v.30-31a)

* Session #2: Called to Witness

“We are witnesses of these things” (v.32a)

* Session #3: Repentance and Faith

“to grant Israel repentance and forgiveness of sins.” (v.31b)

* Session #4: The Gift of the Holy Spirit

“as is the Holy Spirit that God has given to those who obey him.” (v.32b)

On the day of Pentecost, Peter preached to religious pilgrims who had come to Jerusalem for the feast. Today Peter preaches to antagonistic religious leaders. Then, Peter had the whole day. Now, Peter only had a few minutes. In both instances, the kerygma remains the same.

When Peter preached on the day of Pentecost, 3,000 came to faith. Today when Peter preached to the Sanhedrin, “when they heard this, they became infuriated and wanted to put them to death.” (v.33). We will face the same reactions. Some will be touched and accept Jesus as Savior and Lord. Others will react negatively when confronted with their sin.

Secularist governments and liberal religious leaders will go further. Liberal clerics, nuns and prelates will tell us to be nice and accommodating to dissident Catholics, to not give offense, to be welcoming to all. If we do not follow them, we will be labeled bigots and homophobes. Secularist governments will impose its reproductive health and gender ideology agenda. If we do not follow them, we will be oppressed, sued in court, and persecuted.

To them we should say, “We must obey God rather than men.” (v.29b).
