THE NEW EVANGELIZATION
(Part 190)

CASTING THE NET

July 28, 2016
Today’s gospel: Matthew 13:47-53

What is the kingdom of heaven about? What is the work of the kingdom? What is the mission of the Church? The Church is missionary. She exists in order to do mission, to proclaim the salvation of Jesus to the world. This work is intended to reach everyone, in order to give all the opportunity to turn to Jesus and be saved. “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea, which collects fish of every kind.” (v.48). This is why LCSC is important. LCSC is intended by God to reach every lapsed Catholic. As the Catholic Church experiences renewal and revival, then she can accomplish her assigned work in the world, to reach everyone else.

God wants everyone to be saved. But this salvation depends on people accepting it. Not everyone will. Perhaps not many will. The net is cast as widely as possible, but will not result in everyone being received into the Kingdom. “When it is full they haul it ashore and sit down to put what is good into buckets. What is bad they throw away.” (v.48).

And woe to those who will not enter into the Kingdom. At the end of time, they, who were destined to live in eternal bliss with God in heaven, will instead spend the rest of eternity in the fires of hell. “Thus it will be at the end of the age. The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.” (v.49-50).

Jesus asks us, “Do you understand all these things?” (v.51a). Unfortunately many do not. Many do not even consider the consequences of serious unrepented sin in their lives. Many also do not think there is a hell, and so they have nothing to be afraid of. But judgment and hell are realities.

If many people, including Catholics, do not realize these things, then we who know Christ must strive to let them know. We must be concerned about their souls. We must do whatever we can to be instruments of their salvation. Thus this is our work of evangelization. We must be like the scribe Jesus refers to in this passage. “Then every scribe who has been instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old.” (v.52).

Have we been instructed in the mission of the Kingdom? Are we concerned about God’s children as the head of a household would be? Then we look to the work of evangelization, which, having been started almost 2,000 years ago, is old, but also looking today to the New Evangelization.
