THE SERVANT GENERAL
THE NEW EVANGELIZATION
TWO CRUCIAL QUESTIONS
Today’s gospel: Luke 12:54-59
In today’s gospel, Jesus asks us two questions that
are very relevant to the New Evangelization. The first question
is: “why do you not know how to interpret the present
time?” (v.56c). The second question is: “Why do
you not judge for yourselves what is right?” (v.57).
first question is crucial, because we are already in the end
times. Jesus was asked what the signs of the end would be,
and what he described are what we are experiencing more and
more these days. Not just wars, insurrections and natural
calamities, but more especially, loss of faith, increase in
evildoing, many led into sin, rise of false prophets, hatred
for and persecution of Christians, loss of love. If we do
not realize that the final days are upon us (but knowing that
in the Lord a day is like a thousand years), then we will
go on eating, drinking and being merry, and when the Lord
returns, will be unprepared. Then off we go to damnation.
second question is equally crucial, because today values have
turned topsy-turvy, with right becoming wrong and wrong becoming
right. Many Christians, including Catholics, have embraced
the culture of death--contraception, abortion, divorce, same-sex
unions, euthanasia. Those who hold to traditional Christian
values and decry these abominations are called bigots, homophobes
and hateful individuals. In the West, Catholic politicians
claim to be devout, receive Communion, but are strongly for
abortion and same-sex marriage. If we do not know what is
right, and continue with what is wrong, then we are headed
does Jesus call those who can read the clouds and predict
the weather but cannot tell that it is spiritual crunch time?
That the clock is running out? “You hypocrites!”
(v.56a). Judgment will be severe for hypocrites like the Pharisees.
to settling with an opponent (v.58), that should be done between
brethren, or even with any others in normal times. But these
end times are abnormal. Remember: everything is turned topsy-turvy.
So the anti-family and anti-life forces will oppose us, and
force us to do things against our faith, and if we do not,
will sue us in court, where we will lose and be jailed or
pay huge fines. Are we to then become quiet and not speak
of the world’s abominations? We cannot. And so be ready
to suffer as “your opponent will turn you over to the
judge, and the judge hand you over to the constable, and the
constable throw you into prison.” (v.58b).
two questions are simple but profound, and your answers will
be crucial, as these answers can determine the conduct of
God’s work, and eternal life or death for you.
