THE SERVANT GENERAL
THE NEW EVANGELIZATION
MEET, LIVE, SHARE CHRIST - 7
Today’s gospel: John 1:35-42
Today’s scripture passage entitled “The First
Disciples” in the NAB aptly describes, in capsule form,
the process and cycle of evangelization: share Christ >
meet/know Christ > live Christ > share Christ. This
is about the incident when Andrew and another disciple encountered
one shares Christ. Someone proclaims the gospel, or introduces
Jesus to someone. This is what John the Baptist did to his
two disciples. He was with the two, “and as he watched
Jesus walk by, he said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God.’”
(v.36). He was in effect saying, here is an important person,
get to know him. This is the value of testimony. Its purpose
is to point to Jesus, to get others interested in Jesus. Faith
comes through hearing. “The two disciples heard what
he said and followed Jesus.” (v.37). The start of faith
in Christ comes through the testimony of those who know him.
one meets Christ. Having been introduced to Jesus, one becomes
interested in him. He is after all a very attractive personality.
“They said to him, ‘Rabbi, where are you staying?’”
(v.38b). Now one actually meets and gets to know him. “He
said to them, ‘Come, and you will see.’”
(v.39a). Jesus is always inviting us to get to know him, to
enter into his very life. “So they went and saw where
he was staying” (v.39b). One becomes more familiar with
who Jesus is and with the circumstances of his life.
one lives Christ. Having met and started to know Jesus, one
will want to learn even more about him, and will end up learning
from him. The disciples “stayed with him that day.”
(v.39c). Jesus would have taken the opportunity to teach them.
One receives teaching and formation. One then is on the path
of living Jesus’ way of life. One is on the path to
one shares Christ, and the cycle comes full circle. One who
has met Christ and is starting to live his way of life cannot
help but share that with others. Andrew “found his own
brother Simon and told him, ‘We have found the Messiah!’”
(v.41). We share Christ in our own circles of relationshiprelatives,
friends, co-workers, neighbors. We bring people to Christ,
and we bring Christ to people. “Then he brought him
to Jesus.” (v.42a).
cycle or circle of evangelization is complete. Then all continue
to live Christ and to share Christ.
