THE SERVANT GENERAL
THE NEW EVANGELIZATION
A WORK OF THE SPIRIT
Today’s reading: Acts 12:24-13:5
The work of evangelization is the work of the Holy Spirit,
entrusted to us. It is the Holy Spirit who tells us what to
do, as He did with the early Church when He told them, “Set
apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have
called them.” (v.13:2b). The Spirit chooses whom He
intends to use. Then He sends forth those chosen. “So
they, sent forth by the holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia
and from there sailed to Cyprus.” (v.13:4).
we do God’s work, which is divine work entrusted to
humans, and in order to accomplish God’s purposes, we
must know the Spirits role, importance and ways, and we must
become instruments that He can effectively use.
know what the Spirit wants, we must pray intently. It was
“while they were worshiping the Lord and fasting”
(v.13:2a) that the Spirit spoke to them. And when we sense
the Spirit’s direction, before we finally act, we pray
even more, and then we pray for those to be sent off on mission.
“Then, completing their fasting and prayer, they laid
hands on them and sent them off.” (v.13:3).
do the work of the New Evangelization effectively, we must
be attentive and docile to the Holy Spirit, and we must receive
the equipping and empowerment that comes only from the Holy
Spirit. Then we can set off. And we will witness the mighty
acts of the Spirit, as “the word of God continued to
spread and grow.” (v.12:24).
