THE SERVANT GENERAL
THE NEW EVANGELIZATION
SPIRITUAL WARFARE AND EVANGELIZATION – 2
2 Timothy 4:9-17
A basic requirement for understanding the New Evangelization
is knowing that evangelization engages us in spiritual warfare.
We actually confront a powerful enemy and battle him for souls.
It is not just opposing the many ills in society and the world,
but a whole horde of evil spirits who dominate the life of
gives his disciples their marching orders: “Go on your
way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves.”
(Lk 10:3). The way to salvation, the way to victory over the
evil one, is the way of the cross, in the model of our Lord
Jesus, who was the sacrificial lamb. In the same way, we are
sent as lambs among wolves. We are to be pure and innocent
as doves in the midst of ravaging forces that seek to destroy
this spiritual war we will be bruised and bloodied. At times
the enemy might even be within, with so-called brethren and
co-workers opposing or deserting or betraying us, as Paul
experienced (see 2 Tm 4:10,14,16). How do we cope? How do
we survive and thrive? We look to the Lord, who gives us strength
for mission and protection from the enemy. “But the
Lord stood by me and gave me strength, …. And I was
rescued from the lion’s mouth.” (2 Tm 4:17a,c).
For what purpose? “So that through me the proclamation
might be completed and all the Gentiles might hear it.”
(2 Tm 4:17b).
an authentic work of evangelization, which automatically engages
us in spiritual warfare against a formidable foe, is very
difficult and challenging. We can only succeed in the strength
of God. We must realize this, and be humbled by our nothingness
but at the same time seeing the reality that we are called
to do divine work. And God will be there for us. “The
Lord supports all who are falling and raises up all who are
bowed down.” (Ps 145:14).
are those who are bowed down.
down in worship before our God.
Bowed down in humility as we take the lowest place as servant
Bowed down as holy warriors who are assaulted and pummeled
by the enemy.
And the Lord will raise us up.
