THE SERVANT GENERAL
gospel: Luke 11:14-23
These are urgent and critical times in the life of our Church
and of the world. A tsunami of evil is upon the whole world.
Many Catholics have fallen away and 99 of the 100 sheep are
lost. The situation continues to deteriorate. When Jesus returns,
will he find faith on earth?
is why the Spirit has called the Church to a New Evangelization.
At its heart, this is about spiritual warfare. The war rages
in the heavens and on earth between God and Satan. During
Jesus’ public ministry, he drove out many demons and
set people free. “He was driving out a demon that was
mute, and when the demon had gone out, the mute person spoke
and the crowds were amazed.” (v.14).
there were those who could not see or would not believe what
was happening. “Some of them said, ‘By the power
of Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he drives out demons.’
Others, to test him, asked him for a sign from heaven.”
(v.15-16). It is the same today. Many Catholics are unaware
of the spiritual war that is raging around them. Many do not
recognize the assault of the evil one on the Church. Many
are not engaged in resisting that assault.
has actually already crushed the head of the serpent and has
won the victory in this war. But in the devil’s death
throes, he is savagely lashing out and causing much damage.
God’s people need to engage, resist and counter-assault.
In this we are assured that Jesus is the stronger man who
overcomes the strong man, the devil (see v.21-22).
the Church is called to the New Evangelization. In this, all
authentic disciples of Jesus need to be engaged. There are
no non-combatants. Jesus gives us our choice: “Whoever
is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather
with me scatters.” (v.23). There are only two sidesGod’s
and Satan’s. If we are not with God, then we are against
Him. Indeed, today many Catholics have taken the side of Satan.
But even if we do not engage in evil works, by doing nothing
we are aiding the enemy in his assault. Thus, if we do not
do the work of evangelization and mission, which God uses
to bring back and gather His people, then we contribute to
their continued scattering, becoming easy prey for the enemy
and remaining under his dominion.
call has been sounded. The situation is dire. Jesus drove
out demons. Now it is our turn to drive out the enemy. Arise,
