(Part 241)

October 8, 2018
Today’s reading: Galatians 1:6-12

The authentic gospel of salvation in Jesus is the gospel of the cross. There is no other. However, today there are many other gospels being proclaimed. One very insidious gospel today is the gospel of political correctness. Basically, this is preaching acceptance of sinners without talking to them about their sin. This is because to do so would be offensive to them. So what is proposed is just acceptance and accompaniment and being nice. This is a false gospel, and is about false mercy. Because it leaves people in their serious sin, and they would suffer the consequence of eternal damnation for it.

The gospel of political correctness is the approach of liberals and so-called progressives. Liberals focus on the human person rather than on God, on the natural rather than the supernatural, on pleasing man rather than God, on the profane rather than the sacred. Such is contrary to the authentic proclamation of the gospel. “Am I now currying favor with human beings or God? Or am I seeking to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a slave of Christ.” (v.10).

The gospel we preach is the gospel preached by Jesus Christ. There is no other. “Now I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel preached by me is not of human origin. For I did not receive it from a human being, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ.” (v.11-12). What has Jesus revealed? That we repent of sin and turn to faith in him. That God made people male and female and not LGBT, that divorce is not permissible, that divorce and remarriage is adultery (yesterday’s gospel). But today, many Catholics accept contraception, divorce, abortion and same-sex relationships. And many clerics including bishops no longer openly and strongly preach against these, preferring to show concern forthe human condition by prioritizing such things as immigration and climate change.

The spread of political correctness in our Church should be of great concern, as this is leading Catholics astray. They are being brought to focus on themselves rather than on Christ, to satisfy themselves rather than the justice of God, to look to self-fulfillment rather than self-denial. “I am amazed that you are so quickly forsaking the one who called you by the grace of Christ for a different gospel” (v.6). Unfortunately, this false gospel is being spread by those within our Church, including priests and nuns. “But there are some who are disturbing you and wish to pervert the gospel of Christ.” (v.7). False gospels are obvious perversions of the authentic gospel. If political correctness is being propagated by priests and bishops, then that is even worse! They must not be followed! “But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let that one be accursed!” (v.8).

We will keep on saying it, for this false gospel is seeping deeply into the life of our Church. “As we have said before, and now I say again, if anyone preaches to you a gospel other than the one you received, let that one be accursed!” (v.9).
