THE NEW EVANGELIZATION
(Part 249)

NOT UNDERSTANDING THE NEW EVANGELIZATION – 2

June 3, 2019
Today’s reading: Acts 19:1-8

The Spirit’s call is to the New Evangelization. To be docile to the Spirit and act accordingly, we need to understand what elements of the New Evangelization are. One very important element is the role of the Holy Spirit.

One problem with Catholics today is that they do not really know the Holy Spirit. “We have never even heard that there is a holy Spirit.” (v.2b). Well, they have heard of the Holy Spirit, but they do not know what His role is, and they do not live out His empowerment.

Actually, Catholics are baptized as babies. This is when original sin is wiped away. It is “a baptism of repentance” (v.4a). But with the sacrament of Baptism, we also receive the Holy Spirit. But why are so many baptized Catholics living lives that show no empowerment by the Spirit? Why are they not holy? Why are they not about the work of evangelization?

So there is a need for an adult experience of the infilling of the Holy Spirit. This comes with the so-called baptism in the Spirit. This happens as CLS participants are “baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” (v.5). “And when Paul laid his hands on them, the holy Spirit came upon them” (v.6a). With the baptism in the Spirit come the spiritual gifts. “…. and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.” (v.6b).

Thus, in our work of evangelization, a crucial aspect is the baptism in the Spirit and the exercise of the spiritual gifts given by the Spirit to each one. If these are opposed, then the infilling of the Spirit which results in the outpouring of the Spirit cannot happen.

For the work of the New Evangelization, the baptism in the Spirit enables Jesus’ disciples to “debate boldly with persuasive arguments about the kingdom of God.” (v.8b).
