THE WAY FORWARD IN CHRIST
(Part 153)

THE ESSENTIALS OF CHURCH LIFE AND MISSION

April 5, 2016
Today’s reading: Acts 4:32-37

Our primary mission thrusts in CFC-FFL are evangelization, family renewal and work with the poor. These are the three most crucial aspects of Christian life and mission today. Or rather, from the very start of the Church on the day of Pentecost. Unfortunately, these are also among the most neglected in the Church. While there is a lot of activity in our parishes, these often are not what are truly essential according to the Lord’s intent.

The early Church was one large family. There were loving relationships, unity of heart and mind, sharing and caring, and really taking care of everyone’s needs. “The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common.” (v.32).

The early Church was into rapid and massive evangelization, where there were new converts each and every day. The way the Christians lived their lives gave effective witness to the gospel of salvation in Jesus, and so community life was very attractive to outsiders. “With great power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great favor was accorded them all.” (v.33).

The early Church took care of all their poor. “There were no needy person among them” (v.34a). They provided from whatever resources they had, considering themselves stewards of God’s provisions (v.34b-35-37). Thus there was no one in need.

This wonderful situation of the early Church is so far from the situation of the Christian community today. There is not much sense of being a larger family, there is not much evangelistic zeal or work such that most Catholics today are lapsed and lost, and we face the scandal of a world of poverty, amidst the world’s abundance, as most of the population of the world, a world where one-third are Christians, are very poor. This certainly is not God’s intent.

The Church needs to get back to her roots and to the basics. This is part of the call to the New Evangelization. In turn, we in CFC-FFL have already been shown the way. We must be faithful to our call, vision, charism and mission. In this way, we as CFC-FFL will be able to do our share in the renewal and revival of our Catholic Church. Then the Church can truly be God’s light to the world.

We have a big responsibility. We respond by strongly living out each and every one of these three basic aspects of Christian life and mission--evangelization, family renewal and work with the poor.
