THE WAY FORWARD IN CHRIST
(Part 174)

FOR OR AGAINST JESUS

March 28, 2019

Today’s gospel: Luke 11:14-23

We are in spiritual war. Satan against Jesus. The strong man against the stronger man. Much of Jesus’ public ministry was spent driving out demons and breaking the strongholds of the devil over people (as in illnesses). In this war, there is no neutral space. Jesus wants all to be saved, while the devil wants all to be damned. In the end, we either go to hell or to heaven (while passing through Purgatory). The Church that Jesus established has one basic mission, to help save souls.

As such, all who proclaim themselves to be Christians and are part of the Church are to participate in this war. We are either one with Jesus in his work or we are not. And if we are not actively engaging in God’s work, if we are just living our lives apart from the Church’s mission, then we are effectively against Jesus. “Whoever is not with me is against me” (v.23a). If we are not about the work of proclaiming the good news of salvation in Jesus, including gathering the lost sheep, then we in effect are scattering them, for “whoever does not gather with me scatters.” (v.23b). That is to say, if we are not proactively gathering, then, by our inaction or neglect, we contribute to the continued scattering and loss of God’s flock, which the enemy is actively and constantly trying to devour.

But it is not just about those Christians who are not engaged in the mission of Jesus. There are also many so-called Christians who are in fact the enemy within.

  • The unrepentant sinners.
  • Catholics who are for the culture of death.
  • Modernists who want to change age-old Church teaching.
  • Those who malign and calumniate other leaders in order to advance their own quest for power and position.
  • Prelates who hide or tolerate the sexual wrongdoings of their priests.
No wonder the world is in such a dire situation, with deeper darkness, despite the salvation already won by Jesus. The devil has successfully built his kingdom, while the Church has neglected the work of the Kingdom. The Church has not been single-minded in her basic mission. We are not united in vision. Her members are lapsed or even working to subvert her from the inside. “Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste and house will fall against house.” (v.17). The results are there to see: we are losing Catholics by the day. The world is being overwhelmed by a tsunami of evil.

But we as Catholics are on the side of the stronger man, Jesus, who has already overcome and despoiled the enemy. Jesus drives out demons by the finger of God and thus the Kingdom of God has come upon us (v.20). Now it is time to clean up the mess left by the devil in the world. It is time to be fully with Jesus, and to start to gather.
