THE SERVANT GENERAL
OUR THEME FOR 2014
DEAF AND MUTE
Today’s gospel: Mark 7:31-37
We are empowered to witness. People need to meet Christ, to
start to live Christ, and to share Christ. How do people meet
Christ? When there are people who share Christ. To share Christ
is for all who profess to follow Jesus, no matter how seemingly
among the least qualified or least gifted they are.
we have the story of the deaf-mute. Jesus went into his district
“and people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech
impediment” (v.32a). Jesus comes into our lives, and
there are those people who bring us to him. Thus the deaf-mute
come to Jesus in our need. We know we need to be liberated.
Those who care for us, who evangelize us, who share Christ
with us, who bring us to Christ, who intercede for us, are
those who “begged him to lay his hand on him.”
(v.32b). Jesus always responds. Jesus “put his finger
into the man’s ears and, spitting, touched his tongue;
.... and immediately the man’s ears were opened, his
speech impediment was removed” (v.33b,35a). Jesus changes
our lives. He overturns our infirmities. He frees us from
bondage. He saves us! Then we can start to live Christ.
those who witness the goodness and greatness of Jesus should
be unable to contain themselves in witnessing to others. To
witness, to share Christ, is a natural and irresistible consequence
of a personal and liberating encounter with him. Jesus “ordered
them not to tell anyone. But the more he ordered them not
to, the more they proclaimed it.” (v.36).
How about us? We have already met Christ, we are starting
to live Christ, but do we share Christ? Are we in awe of Jesus
and what he has done for us? “They were exceedingly
astonished and they said, ‘He has done all things well.
He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.’” (v.37).
Unfortunately, many of those who have heard the good news
remain deaf to the call to proclaim that good news, and many
who can speak and proclaim the gospel remain mute.
you not remain a deaf-mute. May your ears be opened, and may
your speech impediment be removed. May you truly be empowered
to witness. Go and proclaim Christ.
