OUR THEME FOR 2014
(Part 27)

HOLY WITNESSES ON MISSION

Ash Wednesday
March 5, 2014
Today’s reading: 2 Corinthians 5:20-6:2

Today we are called in a special way to repentance and to return to the Lord. “We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” (v.5:20b). We turn away from sin and wrongdoing, and turn to faith in Jesus. We turn away from the ways of the world, and turn to the ways of the Lord. The metanoia we are called to is a complete 180 degree turn. The turning away from is clear to us. The turning to is less clear. It actually is a turning to the fullness of life in Christ.

This involves three aspects.

First, we are called to be holy. “For our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin, so that we might become the righteousness of God in him.” (v.5:21). Jesus came, suffered and died for us, to win for us our salvation, and to bring us to the righteousness, holiness and perfection of the Father. We are to be like Christ. We are to be another Christ.

Second, we are called to be witnesses. “So we are ambassadors for Christ, as if God were appealing through us.” (v.5:20a). We are to proclaim this good news of salvation in Jesus to the ends of the earth. We are ambassadors to the nations. We stand on behalf of Christ. We represent him, as we present him. We are stewards of the gospel.

Third, we are called to mission. “For he says: ‘In an acceptable time I heard you, and on the day of salvation I helped you.’” (v.6:2a). Paul cites Isaiah 49:8. In this verse God also tells His people, “I form you and set you as a covenant for the people, to restore the land and allot the devastated heritages.” We are to take the land that is our heritage. We are to engage in spiritual warfare. We are to help rebuild the Church and society, devastated by the enemy.

When should all these happen? Now! “Behold, now is a very acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” (v.6:2b). There is no time to lose. Darkness in the world deepens. The tsunami of evil overwhelms the whole earth. Evil rampages seemingly unrestrained. Every day souls are being lost. We must repent and reform our lives. We must be holy, so that we can be effective witnesses, as we go off on mission.

We in CFC-FFL must all now come together as one body that God can truly use. We have been blessed tremendously, we have received God’s grace, including being given the privilege of being God’s instruments of salvation for many others. “Working together, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain.” (v.6:1).

Called to be holy, called to be witnesses, called to mission.

We are saints, we are martyrs, we are warriors.
