OUR THEME FOR 2014
(Part 29)

EMPOWERED TO WITNESS - 2

March 16, 2014
Today’s reading: 2 Timothy 1:8-10

We are empowered to witness. For what? To do God’s work in the world, according to His eternal plan. This is “according to his own design and the grace bestowed on us in Christ Jesus before time began.” (v.9b). Our empowerment to witness is God’s design, from eternity, sustained by His grace through Jesus Christ.

What do we witness to? We witness to “our savior Jesus Christ, who destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel” (v.10). The good news is that Jesus went to the cross and won for us our salvation, in the process destroying death and conquering the enemy. Because of this, we are restored to the Father, and can look forward to entering heaven and eternal life. This is the gospel we proclaim.

So God has provided everything needed--salvation, grace, victory, empowerment, hope for heaven. But we need to respond. We need to become fitting instruments. This happens when we respond to three calls.

We are called to be holy. “He saved us and called us to a holy life” (v.9a). We are a people set apart. We are to be holy as God is holy. We are to be perfect as the heavenly Father is perfect. We are to be saints.

We are called to witness. We are to proclaim the gospel boldly, in or out of season. We are to proudly proclaim our faith and the saving work of our Lord. “So do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord” (v.8a). We do so even as we are ridiculed, opposed, oppressed, persecuted. We are willing to give our all, even our very lives. We are martyrs.

We are called to mission. When we evangelize, we engage in spiritual warfare. We face powerful earth forces backed by a powerful diabolical being. It will be difficult and we will be bruised and bloodied. We will need to “bear (our) share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God.” (v.8b). We are the army of God. We go forth in the strength of His might. We are warriors.

We have received our call. We have been empowered to witness. So now go.
