(Part 39)

May 11, 2014
Today’s reading: Acts 2:14-41

Peter, the very first person to proclaim Christ after they received the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, said, “God raised this Jesus; of this we are all witnesses.” (v.32). In these times, all those who profess to be Jesus’ disciples are called to be his witnesses. We especially in CFC-FFL, being in an evangelistic and missionary community, are to be witnesses. We indeed are empowered to witness.

We are already in the end times. And “this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: ‘It will come to pass in the last days,’ God says, ‘that I will pour out a portion of my spirit upon all flesh.” (v.16-17). For what purpose? So that “it shall be that everyone shall be saved who calls on the name of the Lord.” (v.21). But for people to call upon the name of the Lord in order to be saved, they should believe in Jesus, having heard the gospel, because someone preached the gospel (see Rom 10:13-14). What is preaching the gospel? It is witnessing to Jesus. Upon whom will God’s Spirit be poured out? Upon all flesh. And again, there are those especially called to evangelize. Thus we in CFC-FFL are empowered to witness.

How are we to evangelize? Through person-to-person evangelization, going through the CLS, and then forming people in community. But how are we to do massive evangelization? Through the LCSC LCS. In one sitting, Peter proclaimed the gospel. He used scripture quotes. He talked of Jesus. He confronted people with their sin (v.23). He proclaimed Jesus as “both Lord and Messiah” (v.36). He brought them to repentance and baptism in the Spirit (v.38). “He testified with many other arguments” (v.40a). That is what we do in the LCS.

The result then? “Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand persons were added that day.” (v.41). The LCSC LCS targets lapsed Catholics, thus baptized pagans. The LCS can be done in 9 weeks or in one day (as Peter did). In already (or just) 100 parishes today in 9 countries, we have already seen how effective the LCS is, and how much potential LCSC has for really massive evangelization. We have had 191 participants in Zamboanga del Norte, 147 in Novaliches, 156 in Bohol, 334 in Capiz, 143 in Laguna, 166 in Davao, 172 in Leyte, 266 in Rizal, 120 in Bulacan, 201 in Quezon City, 124 in Kalookan, 126 in Negros Oriental, and just this weekend, 235 in Cavite. I look to the day when we will have 3,000 people in one LCSC LCS.

Our evangelistic work is all about saving souls, especially crucial since the world today is so much in darkness and sin. “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” (v.40b). But people do not have to die in their sins. Jesus has already won salvation for them. They just need to repent and accept Jesus as Savior and Lord. But how can they do that if there is no one to evangelize them? Further, there are millions of lapsed Catholics out there, for whom Jesus has already won salvation. But “the promise is made to you and to your children and to all those far off” (v.39a). How can we reach them all? How can we pass on the faith to the next generations? How can we proclaim the gospel to the ends of the earth?

We can do so through the LCSC movement. The tools have already been given to us. We as CFC-FFL are privileged, but also will be held accountable. We are empowered to witness. Peter said as he “stood up with the Eleven” (v.14a), “God raised this Jesus, of this we are all witnesses.” (v.32). I hope and pray that I can also say the same of my brethren in CFC-FFL, that we are all witnesses.
