(Part 22)

EVANGELIZATION AND WORK WITH THE POOR - 2

January 16, 2015
Today’s gospel: Mark 2:1-12

People brought a paralytic to Jesus, knowing that he had healed many who were sick and afflicted. But what Jesus did surprised them. He said, “Child, your sins are forgiven.” (v.5b). Later, Jesus healed him as well.

There are many Christians who are physically sick or materially deprived. They look to God for relief and provision. They know their material or physical need, but may be totally unmindful of their spiritual need. They might be living lives not in conformity with God’s will.

God does want to provide richly for His people. In fact, part of covenant, if only we are faithful to our part, is physical well-being and prosperity. What keeps physical and material well-being from our grasp? It is sin. It is being separated from God.

Thus the most important thing in the life of a person is reconciliation with God, forgiveness of sin, and living in God’s grace. If this is the case, then everything else, every good thing, will follow.

Thus, even as we are called to work with the poor, to help provide for the least of our brethren, the best thing we can do for them is to evangelize them, to proclaim the gospel of salvation in Jesus. This is God’s priority as well.
