EVANGELIZATION AND WORK WITH THE POOR - 2
Today’s gospel: Mark 2:1-12
People brought a paralytic to Jesus, knowing that he had healed
many who were sick and afflicted. But what Jesus did surprised
them. He said, “Child, your sins are forgiven.”
(v.5b). Later, Jesus healed him as well.
are many Christians who are physically sick or materially
deprived. They look to God for relief and provision. They
know their material or physical need, but may be totally unmindful
of their spiritual need. They might be living lives not in
conformity with God’s will.
does want to provide richly for His people. In fact, part
of covenant, if only we are faithful to our part, is physical
well-being and prosperity. What keeps physical and material
well-being from our grasp? It is sin. It is being separated
the most important thing in the life of a person is reconciliation
with God, forgiveness of sin, and living in God’s grace.
If this is the case, then everything else, every good thing,
even as we are called to work with the poor, to help provide
for the least of our brethren, the best thing we can do for
them is to evangelize them, to proclaim the gospel of salvation
in Jesus. This is God’s priority as well.
