LOOK AT JESUS, LOOK TO THE POOR - 4
Today’s reading: Tobit 1:3, 2:1-8
What is a Christian? It is one who looks at Jesus and looks
to the poor. It is one who grows in faith and holiness, and
looks to the needs of the poor. We have a model in Tobit.
“I, Tobit, have walked all the days of my life on paths
of fidelity and righteousness. I performed many charitable
deeds for my kindred and my people” (v.1:3). He fed
the hungry, clothed the naked, and buried the dead (v.1:17).
Tobit was a rich man, lost his wealth under King Sennacherib,
then was restored to good fortune. On the feast of Pentecost,
he reclined to eat a sumptuous meal, but then had his son
Tobiah search for poor people to share his meal (v.2:2). Told
that one of their people had been murdered, he left the meal
untouched and took the dead man for burial. In this way he
risked his life, as doing so was a crime punishable by execution
went out of his way to share with the poor and to minister
to the poor, even at great risk to himself. In burying the
dead he had his property confiscated and was left with nothing
(v.1:20), but here he was again doing the very same thing.
Tobit was the complete opposite of the rich man who ignored
the plight of the poor man Lazarus just outside his door.
says it is hard for the rich man to enter heaven. But it can
be done. Just look at Jesus and look to the poor.
