FROM THE SERVANT GENERAL

OUR THEME FOR 2015
(Part 5)

VIBRANT WORSHIP

October 5, 2014

When the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples on the day of Pentecost, “there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were.” (Acts 2:2). In the vision of heavenly worship by John, “from the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings, and peals of thunder.” (Rev 4:5a). When John heard the heavenly worship, it “sounded like the loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying: ‘Alleluia!’” (Rev 19:1a). As the angels and saints continued to worship, John “heard something like the sound of a great multitude or the sound of rushing water or mighty peals of thunder, as they said: ‘Alleluia!’” (Rev 19:6a).

In other words, communal worship is loud and vibrant. So it was with the early Church. “As they prayed, the place where they were gathered shook” (Acts 4:31a).

This too is how we as a community should worship. The worship of Israel, the people of God, show us how. “Sing joyfully to God our strength; raise loud shouts to the God of Jacob!” (Ps 81:2). Warriors cannot be tepid.

I notice that worship in many of our community settings is no longer vibrant. Yes we play loud music and sing our songs, but the simultaneous praising is weak and not sustained. In many instances, singing in tongues is largely missing.

Our spirituality is charismatic. Our evangelistic methodology is that of Pentecost. Our model of community life is the first Christian community established on the day of Pentecost. Let us teach our members once again our way of worship (take a look at the talk on vocal prayer), which comes with being “filled with the holy Spirit” (Acts 4:31b).

Let us boldly and loudly praise our God, and thus be prepared “to speak the word of God with boldness.” (Acts 4:31c).
