THE SERVANT GENERAL
OUR THEME FOR 2015
Today’s gospel: Luke 11:37-41
Many Christians are legalistic in their observance of faith,
but are basically just going through the correct motions,
but without the appropriate interior disposition. Many Catholics
in fact, including those who go to Sunday Mass and receive
communion, are into serious sin. They are Pharisaic and hypocritical.
“Oh you Pharisees! Although you cleanse the outside
of the cup and the dish, inside you are filled with plunder
and evil.” (v.39).
this, they deceive themselves into thinking that they are
pleasing to God. But God sees not what is superficial but
what is within. As such, they stand condemned. “You
fools! Did not the maker of the outside also make the inside?”
is one powerful way by which we can be clean inside, that
is, holy? It is to give alms. “But as to what is within,
give alms, and behold, everything will be clean for you.”
(v.41). Giving alms touches what is in the depth of our being,
because it is being loving and considerate of the least, those
who are nobodies, those who have nothing to give us in return.
The world neglects and disdains the poor, as they seem to
be of no use but are instead a burden to society. Thus those
who care for the poor manifest the highest form of love, akin
to loving one’s enemy. As what we do for the least of
our brethren is also what we do to Christ, then we can be
assured that we are well on our way to holiness. We are made
be sincere and do not help the poor just for show or for some
hidden agenda. Otherwise, you would still be Pharisaic. And
you would be a fool.
