THE SERVANT GENERAL
OUR THEME FOR 2016
MERCY ENDURES FOREVER
December 3, 2015
Today’s psalm: Psalm 118:1-27
Our God is a merciful God, and “his mercy endures forever.”
God is merciful, we find our refuge in him, and not in human
individuals or human institutions of power and authority like
governments. “Better to take refuge in the Lord than
to put one’s trust in mortals. Better to take refuge
in the Lord than to put one’s trust in princes.”
(v.8-9). Everyone else can and oftentimes will fail us, but
God never does.
are dangers all around us in the world, but we have the Lord
to turn to. “In danger I called on the Lord; the Lord
answered me and set me free.” (v.5). With God for us,
there is nothing, nothing at all to fear. “The Lord
is with me; I am not afraid; what can mortals do against me?”
merciful God is always there for us. Even as we stray and
sin, his mercy endures. Even as we need to be rebuked or punished
for our sin, God never abandons us. He brings us back from
death to life. “The Lord chastised me harshly, but did
not hand me over to death.” (v.18).
a God! What great mercy! Every day of our lives, we can look
forward to experiencing God’s love and mercy. Even given
all the challenges and hardships of life, we can truly rejoice
at each new day. Each new day is an opportunity to once again
experience the mercy of God. “This is the day the Lord
has made; let us rejoice in it and be glad.” (v.24).
must respond to such love and mercy. First, we must strive
to live lives of holiness as we experience the mercy of God.
We must realize what God has done for us, and what God continues
to do for us. Jesus has delivered us from darkness, sin and
the dominion of the evil one. We are to live our lives in
and for Christ. “The joyful shout of deliverance is
heard in the tents of the righteous” (v.15a).
we must do the work of evangelization, so that many more will
experience the mercy of God. When we do so, we face powerful
forces. There is the evil one, and there are his minions,
powerful forces like the US government, the European Union,
the United Nations, billionaire depopulationists, international
liberal media. As they impose their godless reproductive health
and gender ideologies on us, we are pressed from all sides.
But God is there on our side! “All the nations
surrounded me; in the Lord’s name I cut them off. They
surrounded me on every side; in the Lord’s name I cut
them off.” (v.10-11). At times we feel helpless and
hopeless, we feel the battle is being lost, we feel overwhelmed
by the tsunami of evil, but God is there for us! “I
was hard pressed and falling, but the Lord came to my help.”
look to Jesus. The crucified Christ is the icon of mercy.
Jesus has already defeated the enemy. “The Lord, my
strength and might, has become my savior.” (v.14). God
is a mighty warrior. “The Lord’s right hand works
truly have so much to thank God for. He can never be outdone
in generosity, grace and mercy. “Give thanks to the
Lord, for he is good, his mercy endures forever.” (v.1).
