THE SERVANT GENERAL
OUR THEME FOR 2017
UNITY FOR PERFECTION AND FOR MISSION
Today’s gospel: John 17:20-26
Jesus’ final prayer before his arrest and passion was
for unity. “I pray not only for them, but also for those
who will believe in me through their word, so that they may
all be one” (v.20-21a). Jesus prays for his disciples
and also for those they will evangelize, that all would be
united in him. This unity is intimate, in the model of the
Godhead. Unity is “as you, Father, are in me and I in
you, that they also may be in us” (v.21b). That in itself
is profound and mysterious, but that is what we are called
to. There is no disunity or dissonance between the Father
and the Son. So should it be with us.
unity is crucial so that we the Church can accomplish our
mission. The intent is “that the world may believe that
you sent me.” (v.21c). The Father sent the Son, and
Jesus sends us, to proclaim the gospel and bring people to
belief in him. But how can we be effective if we are not united
in mind and heart, in cause and purpose, and in witness?
unity, as we walk the path of God and live according to His
ways and bask in His glory, brings us to greater holiness
and effectiveness in mission. “And I have given them
the glory you gave me, so that they may be one, as we are
one, in them and you in me, that they may be brought to perfection
as one, that the world may know that you sent me” (v.22-23a).
Perfection and effectiveness in mission. These are the marks
of holy warriors.
it is with such unity, helping bring us to holiness and living
out our mission, that will bring us to our eternal reward
in heaven. After the struggles in this world, this is what
God wants for us. This is Jesus’ desire for his faithful
people. “Father, they are your gift to me. I wish that
where I am they also may be with me, that they may see my
glory that you gave me” (v.24a). Glorious life for all
eternity with God. Such is the reward of holy warriors.
