JESUS: A CAUSE OF DIVISION

October 20, 2016

Today’s readings:
Ephesians 3:14-21
Psalm 33:1-19
Luke 12:49-53

We as the people of God are called to unity, as we are one body in Christ. There must be unity between husband and wife, among family members, among brethren and leaders in Christian communities, and in the universal Church. Unity enables us to accomplish our divine purposes according to the plan and will of God.

Unfortunately, God’s people are divided, with divorce between husband and wife, splits in Christian communities, and schism in the Church. What causes such divisions? It is Jesus! What? Is he not the Prince of Peace? Is it not his one body we belong to? Yes, but the division comes when brethren do not accept him, when leaders have their own agenda apart from his, when people prefer to follow the enemy rather than him. Thus Jesus says, “Do you think that I have come to establish peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.” (Lk 12:51).

Relatives will be deeply divided (Lk 12:53). Families and communities will be divided. “From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three” (Lk 12:52). This has happened so many times, over and over again, in families, Christian communities, religious congregations and the Church herself. There are those who will accept the gospel message and those who will reject it.

How can we be united?

First we need to subject our lives to God and be connected with Him in intimate prayer. “For this reason I kneel before the Father” (Eph 3:14). We need to live in the Son, so “that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith” and be “rooted and grounded in love” (Eph 3:17).

Second we must know that all families belong to the one family of God. It is God “from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named” (Eph 3:15). All children of God must live in the love of Christ and grow in the fullness of the Trinity, to “comprehend with all the holy ones what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” (Eph 3:18-19).

When we act as such, then we will be united. Then God can use His body the Church as His instrument to bring the gospel to everyone, to the ends of the earth. “Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all who dwell in the world show him reverence.” (Ps 33:8).

Jesus came to bring love and peace. This can only happen on earth if God is at the center. “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” (Ps 33:12a). The nations will have to accept Christ. This now is our task, the work of evangelization. This is what is deepest in the heart of Jesus. “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!” (Lk 12:49).
