OUR THEME FOR 2018
MOVING A MULBERRY TREE
Today’s gospel: Luke 17:1-6
Jesus makes an amazing statement. “If you have faith
the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry
tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and
it would obey you.” (v.6).
have faith is to know and follow Jesus, to trust in him, and
to expect him to use you as his instrument. To have faith
is also to know that you are destined for greatness. Indeed,
if we are disciples of the King of kings, if we are empowered
by his Spirit, if we are to do divine work, then that is greatness.
mustard seed is a very small seed. Even if our faith is not
yet that awesome, if we do accept the premises above, then
God can already use us in greatness. Why? Because our work
does not depend on our own capability but on God’s.
We are mere instruments. God can accomplish His great works
even using the humblest of instruments.
a small faith can uproot a mulberry tree and plant it in the
sea, think what a more expansive faith can accomplish. Then
we can go through life not only believing in Jesus, but looking
to the signs and wonders that he can work in and through us.
may not be accomplishing much through you for now. It is not
because He does not want to or does not intend to. It is because
of our limited vision and small faith. It is because we are
focused on our limitations rather than the unlimited power
of God. It is because we just survive from day to day, rather
than moving in expectant and mountain-moving faith.
to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” (v.5). It starts
with knowing that you are destined for greatness.
