THE SERVANT GENERAL
OUR THEME FOR 2018
OUR FATHER ABRAHAM
March 22, 2018
Today’s reading: Genesis 17:3-9
We are destined for greatness. This is because our Father
God is a great God, who entrusts to us the work of His Kingdom.
It is also because our father Abraham was destined for greatness,
as God told him, “you are to become the father of a
multitude of nations.” (v.4b). Further, God told him,
“I will make you exceedingly fertile; I will make nations
of you; kings will stem from you.” (v.6).
entered into covenant with Abraham. “For my part, here
is my covenant with you” (v.4a). This covenant is passed
on through the generations to Abraham’s descendants.
“I will maintain my covenant between me and you and
your descendants after you throughout the ages as an everlasting
covenant, to be your God and the God of your descendants after
you.” (v.7). This covenant has been passed down through
the ages, now to our time. We are the descendants of Abraham,
we are the new Israel, and we partake of this everlasting
covenant. As God was the God of Abraham, so too is He our
so too is Abraham’s destiny our destiny, with God’s
intent for Abraham to be ours today as well. “I will
give to you and to your descendants after you the land in
which you are now residing as aliens, the whole land of Canaan,
as a permanent possession; and I will be their God.”
(v.8). For God’s people today, the land is not only
Canaan, but the whole world. The world belongs to God, but
is temporarily under the dominion of the evil one. We are
resident aliens in this world. We are to win back the world
for Christ, and have a world where Jesus reigns and is King.
is the great work before us. It is God’s intent. It
is part of God’s covenant. But we must be faithful to
our call. “For your part, you and your descendants after
you must keep my covenant throughout the ages.” (v.9).
As we do so, then indeed, according to the very plan and will
of God, we are destined for greatness.
