THE SERVANT GENERAL
OUR THEME FOR 2018
JUST LIKE JESUS
Today’s reading: Hebrews 5:7-9
Our being destined for greatness is due to
the reality that we follow Jesus, the great King of kings
and Lord of lords. We follow him all the way to heaven. On
earth we are to be like him, and in heaven we are to be with
Jesus is God and we are mere humans. Well, as we cannot raise
ourselves to his level, he brought himself down to our level.
Jesus became man. We are to be like him, but he became like
us first (in all things except sin). Thus, “Son though
he was” (v.8a), there were “the days when he was
in the flesh” (v.7a).
destined for greatness is to partake of the
ministry of Jesus, as priest, king and prophet. As such, we
are called to holiness, servant leadership, and mission. We
look to Jesus.
He was “declared by God high priest” (v.10a)
and “he was made perfect” (v.9a). So too are
we called to holiness and Christian perfection.
was the suffering servant, the King who became a slave.
“He learned obedience from what he suffered”
(v.8b). We too as God’s workers will have to endure
hardships and suffering, which will be salvific for us.
was the prophet who proclaimed the gospel of the Kingdom.
As such, “he became the source of eternal salvation
for all who obey him” (v.9b). We too are called
to do the work of evangelization and mission, helping
people take on the salvation already won by Jesus for
To be destined for greatness is the loftiest
of callings. As such it will not be easy. We are called to
embrace the cross. We will have to endure and persevere. But
God, who destined us for greatness, will be there for us.
Again, we look to Jesus. “In the days when he was in
the flesh, he offered prayers and supplications with loud
cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death,
and he was heard because of his reverence.” (v.7).
God wills it. So shall it be.
