FROM THE SERVANT GENERAL

OUR THEME FOR 2019

(Part 10)

THE WORK OF THE GENERATIONS TO COME

November 6, 2018

Today’s psalm: Psalm 22:26-32

David, a holy warrior himself, was a man after God’s own heart. Just like Joshua, he was committed to serve the Lord, and he committed his family to serve the Lord. “And I will live for the Lord, my descendants will serve you.” (v.31). It is the same call to each of us, to love and serve the Lord. Joshua committed himself and his household. David committed his descendants after him. There was no other way to go.

Holy warriors look not only to themselves in the here and now, but also look to the future generations of God’s people, to keep their eyes focused on the Lord and to continue with the work. “The generation to come will be told of the Lord, that they may proclaim to a people yet unborn the deliverance you have brought.” (v.32). This is the work of mission, of evangelization, of spiritual warfare.

The aim of holy warriors in serving the Lord is to recover His dominion over the world, which has been usurped by the evil one. “All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord; all the families of nations will bow low before him. For kingship belongs to the Lord, the ruler over the nations.” (v.28-29). This is a lifelong struggle, until the Lord returns once again. Thus, our children, and their children’s children after them, must be engaged and involved.

Because kingship over the nations belongs to the Lord, then the work of holy warriors must strive to reach everyone, everywhere. The aim is for all to attain to the salvation won by Jesus for us all, and to make it to their eternal abode in heaven with the Father. “All who sleep in the earth will bow low before God; all who have gone down into the dust will kneel in homage.” (v.30).
