OUR THEME FOR 2019
(Part 22)

THE GERASENE DEMONIAC

February 4, 2019
Today’s gospel: Mark 5:1-20

Jesus healed the Gerasene demoniac, who then pleaded to remain with him, to go with him as his disciple. “But he would not permit him but told him instead, ‘Go home to your family and announce to them all that the Lord in his pity has done for you.’” (v.19). First things first. Bring your family to Christ. Do not just go off to reach others when your own family has not really known the Lord. Build the home as a foundation for mission.

But do not stop at just caring for your family. Look to how you can also reach out to others. This is what the former demoniac did. “Then the man went off and began to proclaim in the Decapolis what Jesus had done for him” (v.20a). Now he was a missionary, not just to his own family, but also to others.

Family and mission are the most important aspects of the work of the Kingdom. A Christ-centered family life is essential for mission. The family is where we are loved and cared for, where we receive formation, where the smallest Christian community functions. But such is not just for the spiritual well-being of family members, but also for them to be prepared for doing mission. When family and mission come together well, a powerful witness is provided to the world. The effect? “And all were amazed.” (v.20b).
