OUR THEME FOR 2019
THE DIVINE AND HUMAN FAMILY
February 22, 2019
Today’s gospel: Matthew 16:13-19
Jesus the Messiah is “the Son of the living God.”
(v.16). God the Father and God the Son are a family. It is
a divine family that is “on mission.” What is
God’s “mission”? God created the heavens
and the earth. But when paradise was lost, God sent His Son
Jesus to restore us to Himself. Both purposes (or mission)
were to benefit humankind as the family of God.
God makes use of humankind to carry on with His mission. God
commanded Adam and Eve, and later on Noah and his family,
to have dominion over His created world. In turn, Jesus commanded
his disciples, and by extension us, to proclaim the good news
of salvation in him.
made us stewards of the earth. Jesus made Peter the steward
of heaven. “I will give you the keys to the kingdom
of heaven.” (v.19a). We work to bring Jesus’ salvation
to the whole world and help assure that people will make it
to heaven, and Peter is the gatekeeper of the kingdom of heaven.
As such, God the creator of heaven and earth, and Jesus, who
is the King of all the world and sits at the right hand of
the Father, have entrusted to humankind the restoration of
all things in Christ.
the divine family of God (and His purposes) to the human family
(as God’s instrument), from work on earth to reward
in heaven, in obedience to God’s commands, we must strive
to be families on mission, in accordance with the intent of
the divine family of God.
