THE SERVANT GENERAL
OUR THEME FOR 2019
GOD AND HIS FAMILY
The family is a creation of God. God brings together a man
and a woman and makes them one, to be the start of a new family.
“That is why a man leaves his father and mother and
clings to his wife, and the two of them become one body.”
profound and mysterious union is intended by God to be permanent.
But sinful humanity is often disobedient to God’s commands.
Such was the case with the Israelites. Due to the hardness
of their hearts, Moses was forced to allow divorce. Jesus
needed to reiterate God’s basic command, which was from
the very beginning according to the plan of God (Mk 10:6-9).
Today, Christians have accepted divorce, which has become
widespread. Divorce and remarriage constitute adultery (Mk
10:11-12), a very serious sin.
place of children at that time was also not well appreciated.
Children were second-class. Thus the disciples rebuked people
who were bringing children to Jesus (Mk 10:13). Jesus was
angry at them and said, “Let the children come to me;
do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such
as these.” (Mk 10:14).
is the intent of God for those who fear the Lord and walk
in His ways, as regards his family? They are blessed! (Ps
128:1). “Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within
your home, your children like young olive plants around your
table.” (Ps 128:3). They will prosper (Ps 128:2).
we are children of God. And Jesus “is not ashamed to
call (us) ‘brothers’” (Heb 2:11b).
call is to be families on mission. We work on the stability
and strength of our family, so that we can go forth to serve
the Lord, especially in the area of evangelization and mission.
There will be many challenges, and there will be suffering.
But we walk the path of Jesus the Savior, as we proclaim his
salvation to all, so that they might attain to glory. “For
it was fitting that he, for whom and through whom all things
exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the
leader to their salvation perfect through suffering.”
families on mission we say, “As for me and my household,
we will serve the Lord.” With such declaration and conviction,
we receive God’s blessing upon our family and upon our
work. “May the Lord bless you from Zion, may you see
Jerusalem’s prosperity all the days of your life, and
live to see your children’s children.” (Ps 128:5-6a).
