THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
HARD SAYINGS OF THE GOSPEL
Today’s gospel: John 6:60-69
When Jesus told his disciples about having to eat his flesh
and drink his blood, many of them were shocked and could not
accept the teaching. “This saying is hard; who can accept
it?” (v.60b). And they left him. “As a result
of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way
of life and no longer accompanied him.” (v.66).
many so-called Christians do not accept the hard teachings
of Jesus. But also, many do not know about the hard teachings
of the authentic gospel, since the Church hardly preaches
are these hard teachings? Among other things:
Self-denial and self-emptying.
of the cross.
to holiness and Christian perfection.
The thrust of liberals in our Church is just to make people
feel good. To be taught about God’s love but not so
much about God’s justice. Let us just welcome, embrace
and not judge one another. Do not speak about sin because
it is offensive and divisive.
correctness was never a part of Jesus’ message. He gave
only the words that led to salvation. Direct, clear, challenging.
The irony today is that political correctness has resulted
in many leaving the Church. Why be part of a Church that just
blends in nicely with the world?
the demands of the gospel, Jesus asks us today: “Do
you also want to leave?” (v.67). May our response be
that of Peter: “Master, to whom shall we go? You have
the words of eternal life.” (v.68).
